Celebrated guitarist and vocalist DAN PATLANSKY released his highly anticipated new music video for SONNOVA FAITH today, the latest single from his worldwide #1 Blues Rock album, INTROVERTIGO.

Introvertigo was recently voted the #1 Blues Rock Album of 2016 by the Blues Rock Review USA. This marks the second time Patlansky has been voted #1 in Blues Rock Reviews’ Top 20 Albums Polls. The first time was in 2014 with his previous studio album Dear Silence Thieves which featured the UK rock radio singles ‘Backbite’ and ‘Fetch Your Spade’.

The video for ‘Sonnova Faith’ was shot at The Good Luck Bar in Johannesburg and directed by Timo Crane from Mighty Fine Productions.

“Sonnova Faith is a social commentary song for me. It was inspired not just by religion, but by anyone in power. People in power who fool other people. It’s not to offend anyone or any religion, I’ve got no problems with religion, but I got a problem with people that take advantage of their religion or their position of power.” - Dan Patlansky.

The video features a beautiful shoot of a simple concept; a darker portrayed performance of the song complemented by smoke and a silhouette effect creating a heavenly feel, subtly hinting at the subject matter of the song.

Up the Creek photos by Juliette Bisset.

Creekers, pack your swimsuits, grab your floaty and get into the summertime spirit - Jägermeister presents Up The Creek 2017 is around the corner and you need to start flexing those festival muscles! For the past 26 years, Jägermeister presents Up The Creek has managed to remain small and intimate while growing in reputation and attracting some of South Africa’s best live acts, which has earned it the rightful moniker as the country’s ‘finest little festival’.

Situated on the banks of the breath-taking Breede River just outside of Swellendam, the spectacular grounds offer a singular waterside experience, which truly comes into its own at the unique Sedgwicks Old Brown River Stage. Here, bands play to the crowd from a stage that is built on the banks on the river, while revellers are free to spend their time bobbing up and down in the river on all manner of lilos and weird and wonderful floatation devices.  Life does not get much better than this: fun, friends, music, swimming, partying, dancing and all round good vibes only!

The Jägermeister presents Up The Creek organisers, Red Hot Events, have been keeping a close eye on the live music scene over the past year to identify the country’s best and brightest. Eleven acts have been confirmed so far, including Dan Patlansky, The Black Cat Bones, Albert Frost, Rubber Duc, Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions, The Kiffness, Gerald Clark and the Deadmen, Medicine Boy, Taxi Violence, Jackal and the Wind and Jak Skandi. Keep an eye on the festival’s Facebook page for more band announcements to come in the next few weeks.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE TICKETS?

To ensure that the festival stays small and select, only 2700 tickets have been made available like every year. The single tier ticket price is set at R970, which includes full access for the entire weekend (Thursday 26 January - Sunday 29 January). There are unfortunately no day passes and  no under-18s will be allowed. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment and remember to bring your A-game for the ‘Anything That Floats’ competition – the most innovative craft takes home a prize!

Why, yes indeed! The Heartbreak Motel will once again offer a luxury glamping option for festivalgoers who enjoy having access to a fully-pitched tent, linens, warm showers, a daily breakfast and 24-hour security.

Additionally, we’ve also joined forces with Generosity Water, a wonderful international initiative that seeks to provide safe drinking water for people in developing countries. For every bottle of Generosity Water purchased at Up The Creek 2017, two people in a developing country will receive water for a month. Each bottle has a QR code that can be scanned to see which community will benefit from your purchase.

Follow Up The Creek on Facebook, Twitter (@Upthe_Creek) and Instagram (@upthecreek_festival) to stay up to date, and keep an eye on the website for further developments leading up to the festival.

Today, 6 May 2016, sees the worldwide release of DAN PATLANSKY’s eighth studio album, entitled INTROVERTIGO.

“Introvertigo: The dizziness and disorientation felt by an introvert after spending more than 5 minutes with an extrovert.” - Urban Dictionary.

INTROVERTIGO was written over the course of two years - Patlansky immediately started writing this follow-up after 2014’s critically acclaimed Dear Silence Thieves (voted Best Blues Rock Album in 2014 by Blues Rock Review, USA).

INTROVERTIGO, similar to Dear Silence Thieves, is produced by Theo Crous and was recorded at Bellville Studios, Cape Town.

“Introvertigo describes a feeling I very often experience being an introvert. The concept behind the album is very much about my own insecurities. It’s about being an introvert in the music industry, my experiences in the industry and life in general. Even though the songs on the album have different topics and are not directly about being an introvert, It comes from an introvert’s point of view.”

Patlansky used his personal life experiences as inspiration for the album to ultimately marry good songs with guitar playing. Working with Theo Crous for the second time, he describes the process as more streamlined this time around, which allowed space for a more creative environment.

“Fans can expect a unique brand of Blues Rock born out of guitar playing whilst striving for strong songwriting. I am very excited and proud of this album, and honestly, feel this is my best release to date.”

Fresh off his November 2015 UK and European tour with Joe Satriani and recently nominated as one of Classic Rock magazine’s hotly tipped new artists of 2015, Dear Silence Thieves received non-stop accolades and praise. Patlansky was also voted Male Artist of the Year 2015 by Blues & Soul Magazine,  #4 of 10 Best Rock Guitarists In The World by Total Guitar Magazine in December 2015, as well as one of the Top 20 Blues Rock Artists by Blues Magazine. In February 2016, he received a nomination for Best International Solo Artist for the Planet Rock Radio ‘Rocks’ Awards.

 danpatlansky 6 05 2016 introvertigo album cover

1. Run
A song about running away from mob mentality. The fact is, when people gather in large numbers, their IQ’s tend to drop. They say and do stupid things.

2. Poor Old John
A tongue and cheek story I dreamt up. It’s about a guy’s wife who is unfaithful with a bloke called John, and the things the husband will do to this poor gentleman when he gets his hands on him.

3. Sonnava Faith
This song is not trying to knock Christianity at all, but rather the greedy people with some form of power within religion, that completely take the piss. Money grabbing, lying muther@#kers.

4. Loosen Up The Grip
A song about how pain and discomfort in one’s childhood, inflicted by other kids, can completely hold you back and choke you, as an adult in the real world. It’s about letting go of your insecurities.

5. Heartbeat
A song from the viewpoint of a homeless man, begging on a street corner. Trying to convince people that he is made up of the same stuff everyone else is made from.

6. Stop the Messin’
A sexy note to a woman, telling her to let loose in the bedroom.

7. Bet On Me
A song about backing myself regarding my gut feel. Taking risks that will hopefully lead to bigger success, even though people tell me it’s the wrong way to go.

8. Still Wanna Be Your Man
The story of many musicians. Trying to find the balance between life on the road and family. The fear of losing your woman because of the road.

9. Western Decay
Remembering better and simpler days in western society in years gone by, and the feeling of the world is rapidly changing for the worst.

10. Queen Puree
A song about my little daughter Sofia, and how such a small person who can’t even speak properly yet, can have such control over adults, namely her parents.

Dan Patlansky Talks Introvertigo and Splashy Fen

Splashy Fen festival-goers are in for a treat as Dan Patlansky releases his new album Introvertigo at this festival. His excitement at this release was almost tangible when UNDERGROUND PRESS interviewed him as he promises this one is “my best release to date”.

Thank you, Dan, for taking time out for this interview

No problem.

I read an internet review from a dedicated fan who has collected everyone of your releases who claims that your first cd was astonishing and yet you get better all the time – can we expect Introvertigo to be the best yet?

Without a doubt.  And I mean that quite sincerely.  I think it’s the best release with the best kind of songs I’ve written with the best production ever.  For those reasons, Introvertigo,is my best release ever.

Congratulations on your very successful world tour last year.

Ya, it was great man.  It was, exhausting but well worth it and a fantastic experience.

You collaborated with some awesome musicians.

Yes, it was fantastic, it really was.  I feel blessed with the way it went last year.  We just hope that 2016 holds the same cards for us.

I believe you will be releasing Introvertigo at Splashy Fen?

Yes, that will be the first date the album will be available.  What is  happening is that the official world-wide release is on the 6 May 2016, but because we’re touring the album, with Splashy Fen being the first date, we’re making it available only at live events until the end of April 2016.

With your increasing popularity, are we going to be seeing less of you locally?

Yes and no. I’m not planning on moving overseas anytime soon, I have a family and we’re very happy in South Africa, and I have a very healthy fan base her.  I can’t imagine we’ll be touring more than we are currently, with overseas tours of three to four months possibly  We’ll probably be playing less because we’ve moved to slightly bigger venues.  Instead of doing thirty shows on a tour and playing in five different places in a city, we would rather do one big show at a larger venue in a city.

Are you touring with a regular group of musicians, or do you change them as you go?

It’s the regular drummer and bass player that I’ve been using for the last almost decade now, and for this tour we’ve added a keyboard player, so for the first time, we’re a four-piece on the road.

What is the feeling you get, when after producing a really good piece in the studio, and then taking that piece to a live audience.

It is possibly one of the most rewarding feelings you can get as a musician in my opinion.  For me, at-least it is. The studio is one thing, it’s good for preparing the song, and to experiment with different arrangements and different sounds. Eventually, you’ve got to decide on something and then get that song into a rehearsal room and prepare it for the stage.  Sometimes the song will remain unchanged and sometimes you’ve got alter the ever so slightly to fit into the live situation a little bit better.  And it’s fantastic!  You never know when you take the song to a rehearsal room how well it’s going to work live.  Often when you have ten songs on an album, you’ll find that seven of them work brilliantly live, and three of them just translate well into a live situation.  We’re currently in rehearsals for the Introvertigo tour and it is the first time I have ever had an album with ten songs that work so well live. They all translate so well live which is a really good feeling.

What is it that keeps you so well balanced.

I believe, staying true to what you are passionate about musically, and pursuing your goals passionately without veering off-track just because there might be more money in it.  I believe you alter your brand slightly if it means opening yourself to a wider audience.  Not in the sense of writing pop songs or going completely commercial necessarily, but just by taking what you do and putting it across in a manner that’s perhaps more palatable to someone who’s not a hard blues rock fan.  I think that is the trick.  Part of it is also the producer I’ve used for my last two albums, Theo Crous.  Even though Theo is not essentially a blues rock producer, working with him has been fantastic – it”s been a creative marriage that works well.

Do you prefer being in the studio or on the stage?

It’s almost like apples and oranges. The core thing in the studio is always the song. You worry about the arrangement of it, the different sounds, the strength of it – the focus remains on the song.  When you’re on stage, the songs are already written and arranged and then it becomes all about the performance and feeling the song and how you get it across.  It’s a very different experience.

What do you like most and least about touring?

It’s a good question. I think what I like most is getting my music out there and seeing the world and getting paid for it  – it’s not like a holiday, but you meet incredible people.  The biggest thing is getting the songs out there and playing your music to different audiences.  The worst part is to balance family life with on the road life.  It’s a very difficult, and at times it feels an impossible task to make it all happen. It’s about compromise.  Sometimes comprises have to come from my career and sometimes the family have to compromise. That is probably the part I find the most difficult and like the least.  When I am at home, I put in the extra effort with my wife and daughter and make the most of my time with them.

Do you and your wife share the same music interests?

Yes, I think we do, mostly, to a point.  Her tastes don’t go as deep into the way-out stuff that mine do but she alsoI like’s a whole bunch of stuff that I’m not really into.

Dan, thank you once again for this interview, it’s been great talking to you.

It’s a pleasure.  And thank you very much.

DAN PATLANSKY To Host a Series of Guitar Workshops - November 2015

Just weeks after announcing that JOE SATRIANI has extended the dates featuring DAN PATLANSKY as special guest on the European leg of his Shockwave Tour 2015, DAN PATLANSKY has announced that he will bring the experience home in a series of guitar workshops that he will host in South Africa in November 2015.

The legendary SATRIANI is renowned as one of the rock world’s top ‘shredders’. Shredding is a style of guitar playing which can broadly be described as speed playing, but coupled with techniques including legato, tapping and picking, the style is unique to every player and names like Steve Vai, Jimmy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are all synonymous with the style. PATLANSKY, whilst known as one of the most innovative modern blues rock guitarists emerging internationally, is hugely inspired by Satriani and is excited to bring his European tour experience as special guest to Joe Satriani, at 25 shows across 10 countries, back to local guitarists in South Africa.

“Joe Satriani has been a massive inspiration in my life and to many others. He is the most forward-thinking and most inspirational guitar player of our time and I am extremely honoured and excited to be on the road with him.” - Dan Patlansky.

PATLANSKY will host two GUITAR WEEKENDS in November this year in the Western Cape and Free State. Each weekend has availability for 30 guitarists to spend three days with Dan and his band in a series of workshops and one-on-one lessons designed to improve guitar techniques for beginners, intermediate and experienced players alike.

The workshops cover:
Licks and Riffs
Chords & Harmony
Tone and Gear

A semi-private lesson is included where the student covers what he or she wants to cover. There are also many hours of jamming with other people that have the same passion for guitar playing.

The three-day experience is open to guitarists of any skill level, booking is on a first come – first served basis, and the fee for the three day workshop is inclusive of accommodation, meals and lesson manuals.

The Western Cape GUITAR WEEKEND will be hosted from 20 – 22 November at the Protea Hotel, Stellenbosch, whilst the Free Sate weekend is hosted at the Clarens Inn Backpackers, Clarens, from 27 – 29 November.

After the success of the 2015 European release of DAN’s latest album, Dear Silence Thieves, at The Borderline in London on 27 April, DAN has been receiving rave reviews in Europe, whilst extensively touring Germany, Poland, UK and the Netherlands earlier this year.

“Everyone is talking about this South African singer/guitarist these days. You will be too after you’ve wrapped eardrums around this potent dose of blues rock.” - The Blues Magazine UK, August 2015.

“Dan Patlansky might be from the opposite side of world, but holds the future of blues in his hands.” - Dan Patlansky featured as Class of 2015 alongside Rival Sons, Halestorm, Black Stone Cherry, Von Hertzen Brothers and more in Classic Rock Magazine UK, August 2015.

“Award-winning South African Dan Patlansky brings some much needed spark to an over-subscribed genre on his seventh album... It seems churlish to call a player so far into his career ‘one to watch’, but he is.” - Guitarist Magazine UK, May 2015.

DAN PATLANSKY’s first single, ‘Backbite’ received 14 weeks of radio play rotation on Planet Rock/UK and the station has invited DAN to perform as one of the headliners amongst artists such as Rival Sons, Jo-Anne Shaw Taylor, The Darkness and more, at the Planet Rockstock Festival in Trecco Bay, South Wales 4-6 December 2015. He will also be performing at The Borderline in London, with special guest Aaron Keylock, for a second time after the festival.

DAN also recently released a brand new music video for his latest single FETCH YOUR SPADE via Classic Rock Magazine, which is also now play listed on Planet Rock UK.

Venue: Atterbury Theatre, Pretoria
Time: 8PM

When you hear the name Dan Patlansky, it immediately conjures up images of the genius guitarist, singer/songwriter and globally respected purveyor of the Blues that he is. On 27 July 2015, Dan will perform at The Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria with special guest, Lonesome Dave Ferguson.

Dan is back in South Africa after finishing the third leg of his four leg 2015 European Tour to promote his latest album, Dear Silence Thieves - where he visited Europe in May, June and July and performed shows in the UK, Poland, The Netherlands and Germany.

Dan is still enjoying the success of his seventh album, Dear Silence Thieves, which was voted #1 Blues Rock Album in the World for 2014 by Blues Rock Review – USA. Last year also saw Dan performing as opening act for Bruce Springsteen’s tour to South Africa. Comfortably into his second generation of frayed, Fender electric-fuelled storytelling, the Blues and Dan Patlansky are welded at the hip.

After Dear Silence Thieves swept up the number one spot in 2014, Dan received rave reviews in European and international press for the album. Dear Silence Thieves was released in the UK on 27 April 2015, the same day he performed a launch showcase concert at The Borderline in London. In March 2015, legendary guitarist Joe Satriani also announced Dan Patlanksy as special guest on his UK Shockwave November 2015 tour.

Special guest ‘Lonesome’ Dave Ferguson, a one-man lo-fi-hi-impact explosion of Trans-Blues and Country-Dub. He uses only harmonica, human beat-box and vocals, recording live loops and then layering and building those loops to construct a song. Although it's a solo act, it's not your typical singer-song-whiner type show - expect more in your face dance-style grooves served up in a Deep-South style.
