Bittereinder - The Making of 'Dans Tot Die Dood' Documentary

dans tot die dood logo

This quirky film by Louis Minnaar documents the making of Bittereinder's fourth album 'DANS TOT DIE DOOD'.

In the winter of 2015, the three Bittereinder boys disappeared into the mountains of Mpumalanga, removed from their lives in the city, and made magic music together for a week. This is the first Bittereinder album that features no outside collaborations, and is a true musical and thematic symbiosis of Peach, Louis and Jaco's skillsets. Also, having an acclaimed filmmaker as a band member has obvious benefits, and Bittereinder is almost as excited about releasing this documentary as about releasing the album itself. Humorous and insightful glimpses into the band's creative and personal chemistry have carefully been crafted into something between a memoir and a process guide. Here, for your viewing pleasure, is the official making of documentary of Bittereinder's DANS TOT DIE DOOD, with English subtitles (for those who struggle with Afrikaans even more than Bittereinder does).

Today sees the official release of BITTEREINDER’s fourth album, entitled 'DANS TOT DIE DOOD'.

The album was completed over the course of two months of consistent work in the middle of 2015. Produced by the band themselves (as with all their previous work), most of the songs were written during a week-long retreat in the mountains of Mpumalanga, where the three BITTEREINDER boys were isolated from society and even the internet, focused exclusively on the writing and the music. The album was mixed by Peach van Pletzen at Sleeproom Studio in Pretoria.

Released precisely a year after their previous album, 'Skerm', DTDD contains an interesting progression in sound, featuring new ways of weaving human qualities into electronic music, a classic BITTEREINDER trait. Their first three albums each took two years to complete, with lengthy and dispersed production sessions, but with DTDD the songs were bursting to be written and the band produced a new body of work in a heightened and accelerated state of inspiration. The classic BITTEREINDER criteria are still prominent: conscious rap, lots of big beats made for bonsing, and powerful melodious choruses made for singing along - they still are Die Dinkdansmasjien.

As the lyrical and sonic content of the album developed, BITTEREINDER realised they were making music which was going to work well as part of their live set, and many of the lyrics were investigating the idea that the act of dancing becomes a remarkable counterargument for our collective mortality.

“Everyone will die, but when you dance you prove most effectively to yourself and others that you are very much still alive.”

Bittereinder - HARTSEER GANGSTER

Hartseer Gangster is a song about loneliness. It’s a song about family, about the hustle, about wearing sunglasses in the bath, and about being “moergoed met business”. Everyone in the world can relate to this song because essentially, at the end of the long boring day, we’re all alone, hoping someone will notice and/or remember us for our various “skills”.

Today sees the release of a brand new music video from BITTEREINDER for their new single, HARTSEER GANGSTER.

Knowing that they probably won’t. Hartseer Gangster is the singalong version of the tragicomedy of life, the human condition, and pumping this song in your car with your window rolled down is the best way to give your pesky existential angst the blinged-up finger.

Hartseer Gangster is the first offering of Bittereinder's brand new album, DANS TOT DIE DOOD, set for release in October 2015.

DANS TOT DIE DOOD is Bittereinder’s fourth release. In the middle of 2015, the band disappeared into the mountains of Mpumalanga for a week, removed from society and even the internet, and created what is arguably their best body of work to date. Largely inspired by synth-driven European dance music and drum-decorated modern world music, the album’s sound and lyrics explore what it means to be an individual in a globalized but specifically South African society, and how dance is a counterargument to mortality.

DANS TOT DIE DOOD will be available for pre-order on iTunes from 18 September 2015.
