VAN COKE KARTEL Calls it a Night - The Final Tour

After a brutal decade of rock ‘n roll, 5 full-length albums, various drummer line-up changes, numerous prestigious awards, international tours to places like Taiwan and Europe, opening for monster international acts like Metallica, Van Coke Kartel has decided that it is time to call it quits.

‘’Van Coke Kartel has been a crazy ride.  It was the main focus for Francois van Coke and myself for many years. A lot of work went into the project and we definitely learned a lot from it. It is sad to think that it is all coming to an end, but I’m excited to take the circus on the road for one last time!’’ Wynand Myburgh

The band has not played a live show in 16 months. Rather than just fade away, they will be going out with a bang on their final tour in July 2017.

For the finale, the Kartel will be reuniting with ex-drummer Jason Oosthuizen to complete the line-up that they were known for the longest in their 10-year existence.

‘’The band had many different drummers over the years. A total of 5 to be exact. We felt that the time that Jason was with us, it was our ‘golden years’. In that period we were extremely active and on an all-time high. It just felt natural to end the project with him on drums.’’ Jedd Kossew

When Fokofpolisiekar went on a hiatus in 2007, Francois van Coke and Wynand Myburgh took this opportunity to start Van Coke Kartel. Jedd Kossew later became a full-time member and this addition catapulted Van Coke Kartel’s live performances into another dimension.

‘’When Wynand and I started the project in 2007, we had never been in a band where we were the main song writers. It took a lot of hard work to create those first records. I think we got our confidence from the fact that we knew that when we hit the stage, we will make up for whatever we lacked in the songwriting. When Jedd joined he took us to a new level and he immediately contributed a lot to the writing process. He still does so today with my solo stuff.’’ Francois van Coke

Van Coke Kartel’s energetic, no-nonsense rock ‘n roll show is celebrated as a high-energy spectacular.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see them live for the last time ever.

The music lives on…

Van Coke Kartel has a very strong following on the music streaming platform Spotify, with over 16 000 monthly listeners.

In-between their respective busy schedules, the members of VAN COKE KARTEL took out some time to have some fun together. They released their cover EP, ENERGIE on iTunes last month and now there is also a vinyl edition available.

The 12" vinyl is pressed at 45RPM. The pressing was done on ruby red wax with black inner sleeves and the inside of the cover is also flooded with black. It is a mighty sleek looking package, and it sounds even better than it looks!

The members of VAN COKE KARTEL spent most of 2015 on other projects. Francois and Jedd Kossew launched the FRANCOIS VAN COKE debut solo album. Wynand Myburgh kept busy managing Jack Parow and Fokofpolisiekar’s affairs, while Dylan Hunt joined the band Southern Wild.

The band wanted to do something together again and they wanted to do something different.

They decided to record a cover EP by some of the greats, those who have influenced them along the way.  According to Jedd Kossew, it was important for them to stay true to themselves, their style of music, but also to stay true to the songs they decided to cover.

“How do you choose 5 songs?”

“It’s much easier for us to release good songs when they are already good songs.” Francois van Coke

  1. Energie

“Re-introducing an old song to a new audience.” - Dylan Hunt

Van Coke Kartel explains:

Covering this song is quite personal for Van Coke Kartel.  Francois says that Johannes Kerkorrel and Koos Kombuis was the only Afrikaans music they listened to growing up and the only thing they felt they associated with.  Wynand used to do sound for Kerkorrel at some of this shows back in the day.

  1. Help!

“The Beatles are my favourite band of all time.” - Jedd Kossew

Van Coke Kartel talks about Help!: - youtube.com

Francois and Jedd have been jamming this song in their solo acoustic set for some time now.  Help! is the first single from ENERGIE.  A fun fact is that Jedd sings a chorus for the first time in a Van Coke Kartel song.

  1. I got you (I feel good)

“Who doesn’t want to sing ‘I feel good’?”  - Francois Van Coke

Watch: youtube.com

Wynand says that they wanted to do a song which is fun, they can jam and people would know.

  1. Got to give it up

“It’s something I want to share with people.  It’s one of my favourite songs.”  - Francois Van Coke

Why it had to be a Thin Lizzy song: youtube.com

Francois also says that he loves everything about this song.  “Every note that’s played on it.  I love the original version.”

  1. Born to Die

“Born to Die is our attempt at a pop song.”  -Wynand Myburgh

VCK relates to this song: youtube.com

Van Coke Kartel was eager to put their own spin on this pop song and they think it is now “Spaghetti Western-sounding”.

*Recorded and Mixed by Theo Crous at Bellville Studios

*Mastered by Rogan Kelsey
