Returning To Love with The Graeme Watkins Project

GWP in color

Hit singles, rigorous gigging, and various side projects often leave artists yearning for the opportunity to take a step back and re-centre. Between the release of their 2013 sophomore album Soldier On and now, The Graeme Watkins Project have taken advantage of their absence to do just that. They’re revitalised and brandish a level comfort with their signature pop sound not unlike their past efforts. Underground Press caught up with the 2-time SAMA nominated indie group to get a glimpse into the experience leading up to the release of their latest single ‘Love in Abundance’.

How does it feel to be releasing new material?

It's awesome! We are so proud of the new stuff we are dropping. Everything feels really good about the timing and sound.

Is ‘Love in Abundance’ a standalone single or is this a sign of an album to come?

We are going with releasing music as it is ready, removing the pressure of what people think it should sound like, and taking total responsibility for what we are putting out there.

What inspired the lyrics and theme of ‘Love in Abundance’?

We all went through a major “Growing up” process over the last three years. As you get older, you need to be reminded of the youth that exists when you’re young. Pure unadulterated LOVE keeps you youthful and reminds you of what is importance.

Describe how Rick Joaquim’s direction helped bring the themes driving ‘Love in Abundance’ to life.

He is just a powerhouse. He had this amazing idea and brought it to life in such a beautiful way. We are so stoked with the result.

How did balancing Electronic elements and Rock elements influence this track?

We follow our gut with writing now, we allow what we are listening to at the time to filter in and out of the music we write. This song settled in such a nice way, that it wasn’t a conscious decision, it all seemed to fall into place.

Where does ‘Love in Abundance’ rank among the band’s favourite tracks?

it's up there at the top, hey. It represents where we are in our lives and careers now! and so it's super relevant. it's also awesome having something new to jam at gigs, it brings a fresh energy to our set.

Is TGWP planning any future gigs featuring ‘Love in Abundance’? If so, when and where?

Yup, check out social media, tours are being planned for September.

Who is OH ROXY? #ThisIsMe

Oh Roxy This Is Me Itunes CoverWhy the 'Oh' in front of Roxy?

'Oh' goes perfectly with my personality. I couldn't just be Roxy. I had to be OH Roxy! Something you can shout in front!

Who is Oh Roxy?

Oh Roxy is an alternative pop band from Cape Town, South Africa. Myself and producer Kamil Govender are the two members.

Why did you choose #ThisIsMe as your first single and what do you feel it portrays about you?

'THIS IS ME' is the best introduction to me as a person and musician. It shows off the vibe we want to go for musically as a band, so the public can get a real sense of how different and experimental OH ROXY plan to be. The lyrics portray me as a person. The chorus especially. I am a creative and think and see things differently to others, so this really is the perfect way to show South Africa what they're in for! Whooo!

What can people look forward to from your sound?

Something really different. We have a lot of musical / cultural influences in our stuff. Lots of African beats, Native American chants, local sounds too. Just think very, unique and experimental. We want people of all ages to stop and be like, "Flip this is so weird?! I love it!"

What makes you unique in the SA music industry?

We have something different to offer. Like I said before, it's very experimental but with a local / strange twist thrown in the mix. It really is something so new and original and I'm really excited to see what people think!

 reburn artist spotlight 1

Described by some in the local music industry as being ‘the next best thing to Table Mountain’, Cape Townian indie-rock powerhouse, Reburn took some time to chat to Nick Darke in the latest episode of The SA Artist Spotlight.

'Inferno' A Cosmic Pop Journey

From the deep unjustified encounters of space I present to you the INFERNO album cover! For me this album embodies a true romance of disco funk and modern space galactic pop introducing something I like to call COSMIC POP. On the journey of making this album with Produced By VAM and FutureNow Records it was really important for me to bring back the emotions I love most about the 60's and early 70's era! Its sensuality, sex appeal and happy go lucky attitude that I interpreted in my own way. I wanted to make music that excites my soul and my body. Music specially crafted for people out of this world who are down to boogie!
