An explosive sound, taking South African music into a new direction, comes in the form of one of 2018’s hottest debut releases, Querencia.
Cape Town-based alt/folk/rock quintet BRYNN is the product of a few of South Africa's finest musicians: Jules Terea, Hezron Chetty, David Van Vuuren (Southern Wild), Alex Smillie (Southern Wild) and Eddy Kriel. This stellar cast’s powerful performances, potent lyrics, theatrical energy, and fresh yet complex musicality have left audiences awestruck and demanding an album. Now, BRYNN delivers.
“Our mission is to express through music what we feel living in today's world,” says frontman Jules Terea. “We want to create an experience that can hopefully help us all feel a little less alone.”
The Spanish word ‘querencia’ is defined as, “a place from which one's strength is drawn, where one feels at home; the place where you are your most authentic self”.
This theme is drawn through the album, with powerful lyrics like:
“…don’t forget to remind yourself that you are free
‘cause after all
isn’t that what they tell you every night on your TV screen?”
Months before its release, Querencia has already captured the attention of bloggers and promoters throughout the country. The award-winning blog Texx and the City has labelled the first single from the album ‘About Time’ as one of the best local songs of 2017, calling it “a dreamy, powerhouse of a track, which positions [BRYNN] on unique grounds”.
Querencia was recorded and mixed by Raiven Hunter at Popsicle Studios and mastered by Vincente Espi at Songololo Music. The album features artwork by vibrant artist Chris Auret, and is designed like a canvas painting, thereby capturing the essential nature of this album: it is a piece of South African art, which we can have as our own.
BRYNN burst onto the Cape Town music scene in 2017 and already have a fiercely loyal fanbase and are attracting diverse crowds to every show they play. BRYNN has played main stage slots at festivals around the country, such as, Up the Creek, Smoking Dragon, Spark Festival and River Republic. In February 2018, BRYNN were hand picked by international rock legends, Incubus, to open for them at their Cape Town show during their South African tour. Immediately after this BRYNN embarked on a nationwide album launch tour. Their official launch event was hosted at The Mercury Live in Cape Town, featuring some of South Africa's finest acts such as Southern Wild, Crimson House and Hezron Chetty & The ZugZwang.
