Cape Town, 9 June 2025 — This past weekend, Capetonians came together in a remarkable display of compassion and solidarity at Cavendish Square. The popular lifestyle destination hosted a moving cancer awareness initiative in collaboration with Living with Cancer SA, proving yet again that the city’s heart beats strongest when its people stand together.
The centre court of Cavendish was transformed by a visually arresting cancer ribbon installation. Visitors were invited to write a name, word of hope, or personal message on coloured balls, which they placed into the towering ribbon — a powerful, collective tribute to those fighting cancer, survivors, and loved ones lost. As the day progressed, the installation swelled with messages of strength, love and remembrance.
The initiative also highlighted the critical work of the Living with Cancer SA registry — a patient-driven, confidential database designed to improve care and advocacy efforts nationwide. Anyone affected by cancer, from patients and survivors to family members and caregivers, could add their voice to a growing movement aimed at driving meaningful change.
A pivotal moment came on Saturday, 31 May, when Belinda Wagner, founder of Living with Cancer SA, addressed visitors. Wagner’s candid, personal story resonated deeply, encouraging honest conversations around cancer’s real, human cost. Her advocacy, bolstered by supporters like Old Mutual Properties, CANSA, Workwide Mobile, Ogilvy Health, and members from the Prostate Association of South Africa, turned this into more than a campaign — it became a grassroots movement.
“This was never about grand gestures,” noted Faizah Behardien, Cavendish Square’s Centre Manager. “It was about those small, deeply personal moments when someone stops to write a name or a message. That’s what made it powerful.”
The overwhelming response marks just the beginning. According to Wagner, the inaugural Cancer Survivors Day statue campaign — hosted across eight malls nationwide — will become an annual tradition, continuing to raise awareness, drive advocacy, and honour every cancer story in South Africa.
