Review: Afrikaans Collaboration - 'Diversiteit'

In this time of confusion and trepidation, the lovely humans at Tunes Studio decided to delve into a side of the South African music scene that is oft-overlooked by bringing together the likes of Bacchus Nel, Riaan Nieuwenhuis, and Jolyn Phillips to name but a few for 'Diversiteit', an album that aims to bring us together as a nation by celebrating our differences.

The result is an eclectic mix of sounds that mixes tradition with modern sentiments. 'Die Bloed' is filled with the sounds of the charming small towns that have largely defined South Africa’s cultural landscape with Churchil Naude’s verses about forgetting past grudges and coming together giving them a contemporary makeover while '46664 Duisend Stukke', Frazer Barry’s offering, is a reggae-infused apology to our continent and the legacy that South Africa’s freedom fighters tried too hard to create.

Charel Kleinhans brings in a taste of more traditional rock ‘n’ roll with 'Ubunye', the only English track to feature on the album, while Jolyn Phillips goes the experimental route with 'Skoonmaakmiddels', a beautifully mournful number about not being able to move on.

I’ve only touched on a few songs here but'Diversiteit' is an album that acts like a roadmap through the back-routes of Afrikaans music and makes one realise that there is a whole lot more to this country than the cynics would have us believe.
