Luke de Agrela wears his influences on his sleeve without compromising his artistic integrity in his latest EP Unzipped.

Based in Johannesburg, de Agrela grew up with a love for pop music and pop culture with the likes of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys forming his musical mind from a young age.

These influences form the basis of Unzipped as the up-and-coming pop-artist journeys through the trials and tribulations of relationships and identity crises.

'Behind My Back' starts things off with a beat filled with all the attitude that defined pop in the early 2000s but with lyrics updated to reflect the messy, game-ridden relationships that have become the norm in the dating scene.

Things take an R&B turn in 'What You Need,' a tender love song characterised by a contemplative beat and the odd harmony that verges on cheesy but just manages to avoid that trap. 'Sleep When I’d Dead' follows on from this but feels more like a filler track than anything else. It’s only in the bridge where things start getting interesting but there’s still not much to write home about.

All that can be forgiven and forgotten when “Identity” comes around. As the title suggests this track is the manifestation of an identity crisis and that’s what makes it the most interesting song on the EP. As de Agrela waxes lyrical about finding himself in a world bent on homogeneity the song moves through the darker, more fertile parts of electronic music creating a landscape begging to be explored.

The first three songs on Unzipped show off Luke de Agrela’s musical background but it’s in “Identity” where he comes into his own and proves that his sound is about a whole lot more than bringing the early 2000s into the present day.

‘Sleep When I'm Dead,’ is available on all streaming platforms
