Rocking for West Papua: Band Review – Slippery When Wet

They hail from the Vale. Or at least have been rocking out in pubs, cafes and pool halls for so long that the whole of the East Rand has adopted them. But us regulars know they own the town. A punk rock band started by two brothers who breathe for music as much as you and I - if not more so - and they call themselves Slippery When Wet.

These fine gentlemen are here to rock out on behalf of West Papua on the 8th of October. But before we get into that let’s delve a little deeper into just who these guys are.

Brothers Jadd and Kieron formed the band in mid 2012 along with past drummer Seth. Brad Wiggins joined the trio 2 years later with a guitar in hand. Seth left in 2015 to spend more time with his family and Wally Baggins subsequently replaced him on the drum kit.

The guys then decided to up it a notch and Kieron (originally on bass and backing vocals) has now moved onto the trombone. Les Bainbridge (you may know him from The South Shore Ramblers) has joined the band and taken over bass and backing vocals.

The guys have shared the stage with names like Crossfire Collision, Half Price, Just Jinger and The Slashdogs to mention a few.

Jadd (lead vocals) is well known in the music scene for helping and supporting bands and musos, purely out of the goodness of his own heart. He used to organize the Sunday D-Brief sessions at Street Café in Edenvale, giving bands both well and lesser-known a chance to perform in a relaxed environment with good mates. When the venue became unavailable that didn’t deter him. In just short of a week a new venue was created a mere 400m down the road (if any) at Burnout Pub n’ Grill and the Sunday D-Brief has continued to grow from there, along with Jadd’s ultimate passion.

Come see these legends perform on the 8th of October at the Wunderbar German Club in Edenvale rocking alongside The Slashdogs once again and pop punk band Made For Broadway. The venue opens promptly from 2pm and tickets are available at the door. 50 bucks gets you in before 6pm, otherwise 80 bucks from 18:01 onwards.

Use the tag #musicisaweapon and take a stand against oppression in West Papua, South Africa and the world.
