Australian pop-punk outfit A Swift Farewell takes us back in time to when high-energy beats and catchy melodies disguised dark lyrics in their latest single ‘The Fire’.

The hey-day of pop-punk was filled with self-indulgent torments of the heart and soul that lamented the agony having feelings. The Sydney-based band’s single, however, takes it a step further by pondering the vicious cycle of addiction and the thoughts that surround it.

While there’s nothing new about contrasting dark lyrics with upbeat music, the Sydney-based outfit’s take on the style stands out simply because of its extremes. If you don’t pay attention to the lyrics ‘The Fire’ sounds like it would be the highlight of a mid-00’s house party but when you fully take in Emma Mather’s words and all their implications it adds another, much darker layer to the song that makes it seem almost like a parody of pop-punk.

The catchiness of ‘The Fire’ belies its dark and at times terrifying lyrics, its inch-perfect interpretation of a genre many of us see as a novelty turning it into an emotional Trojan Horse.
