Sheron, the veteran South African alternative rock artist, has long been known for his ability to capture the raw emotions of love, loss, and longing through his deeply expressive music. With over 30 years in the industry, his career spans from his time as a key member of the band X-Over to a flourishing solo path that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
Sheron unveiled his emotionally charged single and music video ‘Need You’ on 14 February, a poignant exploration of heartbreak and nostalgia that showcases his signature melancholic yet soaring melodies. Beyond his musical achievements, Sheron’s multi-instrumental mastery, collaborations with industry icons, and impressive performances both locally and internationally further solidify his status as one of South Africa’s most respected artists.
In this interview, we delve into the heart behind Sheron’s latest release, his musical journey, personal reflections, and the creative forces that continue to inspire him.
Q: Sheron, you've just released Need You, an emotionally charged single. What inspired you to explore heartbreak and longing in such a raw and personal way? Is there a particular experience that shaped the song’s direction?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from my personal life and experiences. While heartbreak can be very painful, it is also character-building and encourages growth. One cannot regret going through heartache, as it leads to personal development and, in my case, many songs that help me find closure and move forward. The feelings and thoughts of hurt often transform into healing through my music. We all have or will endure pain throughout life, especially when it comes to love and relationships. It’s an inevitable part of the journey.
Q: As a seasoned musician with over 30 years of experience, how have your perspectives on love, loss, and music evolved over time? Do you find it easier to express these emotions in your music as you grow older?
When it comes to dealing with personal pain, I don’t think it necessarily gets easier, but I have learned not to let it bring me down. Instead, I use it as inspiration to write and express myself through music.
I also believe that, with time, I have become a better songwriter, growing both personally and musically.
Q: The music video for ‘Need You’ is visually stunning. How closely did you work with the director to create the atmosphere of loneliness and nostalgia? Was there a particular visual motif or concept that stood out to you during the creative process?
Thank you! I co-directed the video alongside one of my best friends, Kobus Nieuwenhuys, who has helped me with this and other videos in the past, including I Know, which was shot in Durban with his assistance. We always strive to capture the essence of the song visually - I think we achieved that! We wanted to represent those initial feelings of hurt and longing for someone you miss deeply.
Q: You’ve had such a varied career, from being part of X-Over to your solo work. What are some of the most defining moments from your journey that helped shape you into the artist you are today?
I wish I could pinpoint one or two specific moments, but that’s impossible. Almost every step of this journey has helped define who I am, both musically and personally. There are simply too many to name!
Q: You’ve performed on some major stages, from Sun City to the Australian Embassy in Beijing. What has been the most memorable performance for you, and how did it feel to perform for President Cyril Ramaphosa?
Performing for the President of South Africa was a major highlight, and I am incredibly grateful for that experience. The Australian Ball in 2004 was also unforgettable, even though we were ridiculously tired after four days of travel with very little sleep! Despite the exhaustion, it was a hugely successful event and was followed by a few months living and performing in Hong Kong, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Q: With your ability to play multiple instruments, do you find one instrument speaks to you more than the others? How do you decide which instrument to focus on for a particular song or performance?
I can’t say there’s one set method. Sometimes, I’ll sit at the piano and something magical will happen. Other times, it might be the guitar or bass. Quite often, inspiration even strikes in the shower! When that happens, I must race to my home studio to try and capture the idea before it fades. I don’t think I consciously decide which instrument to use—it just seems to happen naturally.
Q: You’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with artists like Dr. Victor and Dilana. What do you value most about these collaborations, and how have they influenced your musical direction?
Every collaboration has taught me something valuable. Each artist has their own unique approach to music, and if you’re open to learning, you can absorb so much. There are a million ways to do one thing, and I always aim to expand my knowledge and find new ways to create.
Q: Your solo career has garnered chart-topping hits. What motivates you to keep evolving creatively, and what can fans expect next from you musically? Is there a new album or project in the works?
The love of music, the joy of creating, and the need to express myself keep me going. There’s always something in the works! Right now, I’m working on a follow-up to ‘Need You’, an EP collection of love and heartbreak songs spanning the last two decades. It’s going to be deeply personal and emotional - some of the songs were written years ago, while others are more recent. Later in 2025, I’ll be releasing another album - either a longer EP or a full-length project - that consolidates my rock era, featuring songs from the early 2000s to the present. I’m also working on a hybrid pop-rock and hip-hop song with my son, Daniel, which will be released later in 2025. It’s incredibly exciting to collaborate with him and watch him grow both musically and personally. I’m very proud of him and his talents, and I can’t wait to share that song with the world.
Q: Beyond music, what are some personal interests or hobbies that bring balance to your life? How do these interests influence your music and creative process when you're in the studio?
I have a passion for cooking - and, of course, eating! I love preparing good home-cooked meals. I also have a deep interest in aviation, though I haven’t yet had the time or opportunity to fully explore it. Growing up, my family had a strong connection to the sea and water sports, so I enjoy boating and skiing. I still need to improve my sailing skills, though! Technology fascinates me, and I love good films. Above all, I absolutely love nature. Whenever I feel stressed or overwhelmed, I take a drive to a remote, scenic location - somewhere like the Drakensberg. It’s a long journey, but it’s always worth it. My favourite place to camp overnight is Sterkfontein Dam … it’s the perfect escape.
