Johannesburg, 7 March 2025: There are more than 3,000 species of snakes on the planet and these mysterious creatures are found everywhere except in Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, and New Zealand. Contrary to popular belief, only approximately 600 species are venomous, and only about 200—seven percent—are able to kill or significantly wound a human.

Snakes play a key role in the ecosystem by controlling rodents and pests, and increased awareness can help increase our understanding of these elusive creatures. National Geographic Wild (DStv 182, StarSat 221) dedicates the month of March to understanding distinct snake species that live in a wide variety of habitats, with snake focussed specials airing every Saturday at 18:00 (CAT).

Programming includes:

Snake City: Snakes in the City Venomous Face-Off, Sunday 9 March at 18:00

A brutal heatwave in India has snakes seeking shelter. Simon and Sioux battle the temperatures while attempting to rescue hidden, deadly serpents.

Snake City: Snakes in the City Venomous Face-Off, Sunday 16 March at 18:00

Sioux and Mbali face a feisty black mamba while Simon wrestles another one himself. So many calls are coming in that the team must split up.

Snake City: Baby Snakes Compilation, Sunday 23 March at 18:00

A snake City compilation special with the best of all the baby snakes.

Killer Snakes: Sunday, 30 March, at 18:00

Packed with a potent neurotoxic venom, one family of snakes kill more people than any other on earth.
