It has been a while since big music festivals could be staged due to covid 19 pandemic restrictions. Great joy was felt when concert dates for the popular Liefde by die Dam 2022 Festival were announced and it was evident that music-lovers were hungry for an epic live concert when the tickets for both Johannesburg and Cape Town editions of the festival sold out super fast.
In spite of rainy weather, thousands of people flocked to the Johannesburg concert on Sunday 3 April and this past weekend, the Cape Town crowd rocked up to a beautiful sunny day concert at Meerendal on Saturday 9 April. Pierre Greeff from Die Heuwels Fantasties, who is also one of the organisers of the Liefde by die Dam festival says: “It feels great to be back! Our latest previous Liefde Festivals were held in 2019. We are proud to bring only the best artists and sound to the Liefde stage. Every artist on our A-List said yes! Liefde by die Dam has always been a big day out, with big names on a big stage. We are incredibly happy that we could present the event in the style and scale that it is used to. The crowds in both cities were amazing. Everyone was just happy to see each other and the synergy between the artists and crowds was incredible to witness.”
The line-up included: Bernice West, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Demi Lee Moore, Refentse, Elandré, Robbie Wessels, Appel, Youngsta CPT, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Francois van Coke and Spoegwolf alternated in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
There were various highlights and the cherry on the cake was the red, blue and purple flares that Die Heuwels and Francois van Coke set off during their performance at Emmarentia Dam, to celebrate the return of the festival.
It is a tradition to leave your festival blanket behind after a Liefde by die Dam show, for the Liefde Wen liefdewen.co.za team to collect afterwards. Liefde Wen spokesperson Christine Vorster says: “We are very grateful for this initiative. We collected big heaps of blankets at both events and will make sure that each one of them goes to families that are in need this coming winter.”
Festivalgoers had to show their vaccination certificates or a negative covid test at the gates. This protocol was followed at both concerts to ensure that festivalgoers feel as safe as possible.
