After almost a decade apart, South African alternative rock band Snowing Down South is back with a brand-new single Birds Above My Bed along with a music video, marking their triumphant return to the scene. The band, originally formed in 2011, was a defining force on campus rock radio, with their breakout single "It's Not Your Fault" dominating the Tuks FM charts for nearly two months. Now, they’ve reconnected, bringing fans a fresh but familiar sound with their latest track, released alongside a gritty music video filmed in Cape Town.
Snowing Down South quickly rose to prominence with their distinctive ability to blend American and British rock influences into their raw, dynamic sound. Known for their effortless transitions between subgenres, the band has been described as indie, alternative, and even progressive rock, depending on the listener’s perspective. Following their unexpected split in 2015, the members pursued individual paths before reuniting in 2023 after an impromptu late-night listening session that reignited their creative spark.
Their forthcoming EP, No Such Place As Far Away, promises to showcase a more polished, mature sound while staying true to their alt-rock roots. This single offers a glimpse into what fans can expect from the project, filled with atmospheric, midnight-dream vibes.
The band spoke lightheartedly about the making of their new music video: "After lots of back and forth, we decided to head into the city to see what Cape Town’s all about. Guess someone filmed it,” they said with a grin. The video captures their journey through the city's streets, blending raw emotion with a visually striking backdrop.
The track itself has a deeply personal history. Written over a decade ago, the song was initially inspired by a long period of isolation and a Bruce Springsteen-esque longing for someone who may not even exist. While it doesn’t carry a direct message, it reflects the feeling of getting lost in your own thoughts after too much time alone.
The band’s writing process has been a labour of love. The guitar parts and melody were first conceived years ago, but the band has spent the time since reforming and refining the structure, allowing it to evolve naturally. The recording process was equally unconventional, with the group travelling across South Africa for six months, capturing the raw essence of the track on the fly. Produced independently by the band’s very own Simeon Kriel, the song bears the fingerprints of their journey and camaraderie.
With their long-awaited comeback now in full swing, Snowing Down South is ready to reconnect with their fans and reintroduce themselves to the world. Keep an eye out for the upcoming EP No Such Place As Far Away and experience the return of one of South Africa’s most exciting alternative acts.
