For nearly a decade, Jody Mayhew has been shaping his career in the South African music scene, touching lives with his heartfelt lyrics and unique sound. From his early performances in Pietermaritzburg and Brits to his success with tracks like "Travel the World," Jody’s journey has been marked by authenticity and emotional depth. In this interview, Underground Press speaks to Jody about his newest single, "Nog 'n Kans," the power of music to heal, and his evolving role as a singer-songwriter in both Afrikaans and English.
You've been making music for a while now. Could you tell us how your upbringing in Pietermaritzburg and Brits shaped your musical identity?
It made me confront emotions and memories that aren’t always easy, but with the help of music, I could write through it. This process has constantly shaped me into a better musician.
You've previously released several tracks in English, such as "Travel the World." What led you to explore Afrikaans more deeply with your latest single, "Nog 'n Kans"?
It was easier to convey my feelings in Afrikaans than English at that moment, so I didn’t fight it. I believe if you have the tools, use them.
"Nog 'n Kans" is an incredibly emotional and uplifting song. Could you tell us more about the story behind it and why it’s so important to you personally?
I’ve experienced the same emotional rollercoaster the song talks about, and when I read about a young boy taking his own life, I felt I couldn’t just sit and do nothing. Writing is the only way I know to reach people, so that’s what I did.
Your lyrics in "Nog 'n Kans" emphasise hope and the importance of reaching out to others. How do you feel music can help people who are struggling emotionally?
When someone is going through something and you don’t have the words to comfort them, I believe music can often be the bridge. Music reaches a place where nothing else can, and when it’s accompanied by the right words, it’s often the perfect solution.
Looking at your career so far, what has been the most rewarding moment as an artist? Is there a particular performance or song that stands out to you?
It’s being able to do what I love for a living, but also having a song I created get heard - like "Travel the World," which was played on 30 radio stations and is still making an impact today.
You’ve shared the stage with some prominent South African artists. How have those experiences influenced your music and your stage presence?
It’s shown me that being yourself is the real brand you should be promoting. That’s given me the confidence to share my music on any stage.
Are there any artists or bands that inspire you today, either locally or internationally?
I enjoy listening to meaningful songs. Artists like Kolton Moore and The Clever Few, Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, Herman Kleinhans, and Jan Blohm are big inspirations to me.
With "Nog 'n Kans" releasing soon, can we expect more Afrikaans tracks from you in the future, or are you planning to continue with a mix of languages?
I’ve got a lot of songs in both languages, so it will probably be a mix.
The music industry has changed a lot over the years, especially with streaming. How do you navigate promoting your music in today’s digital landscape?
I’m still getting the hang of it. I’m trying to be more active on social media so that when I release something, it’s easier to get people to listen because they know me.
Besides your musical talents, we know you’re into sports and staying active. How does this help balance your creative life?
I think taking breaks is key to developing creativity. It helps me come back with a fresh perspective, which keeps me from getting frustrated with the process.
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Bon Jovi. I’ve always been a huge fan.
As Jody Mayhew embarks on the next chapter of his musical journey with "Nog 'n Kans," it’s clear that his message of hope and resilience resonates on a deep level. His unique fusion of singer-songwriter, country, and Afrikaans influences sets him apart, allowing him to connect with a wide audience. We can’t wait to see where this talented artist goes next.
