Cape Town, 24 October 2024: This past weekend, 14 schools from Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats came together for an inspiring showcase of talent, at the Liberty Promenade Next Generation Musical Showcase, centred around a powerful theme: “Stay Safe in Cyberspace.” This event not only celebrated the incredible abilities of young performers but also provided a platform for them to express their views on current social issues in a positive manner.

This year’s theme encouraged students to explore the benefits and challenges of social media and the digital world. Through their performances, learners raised awareness about essential online safety practices, emphasising the importance of limiting screen time, thinking before clicking, being mindful of hurtful comments, the reality of catfishing, safeguarding personal information, and critically assessing the accuracy of online content.

The annual showcase featured vibrant, spirited performances that delighted the audience. Students dressed as their favourite emojis and social media icons to enhance their messages, while posters created by the schools are displayed at the mall to raise public awareness about online safety.

Beacon School for LSEN - winner in the special needs category; Eastville Primary and West End Primary - winners in the Primary School category; Portland High and Spine Road High winners in the High school’s category. Each school won R10,000 for their outstanding performances based on their creativity and interpretation of the theme. In addition to the main school prizes, selected learners and teachers received special awards for their exceptional contributions to the showcase.

Shoppers now have the opportunity to vote for their favourite performance, giving one additional school a chance to win R10,000 in cash. To cast votes, they can visit www.libertypromenade.co.za.  Voting closes on 30 October 2024 at 23:59. Ts and Cs apply.

Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade was delighted at the performances on stage: “We would like to commend the learners for their creativity and their enthusiastic expression showing a deep understanding of online safety issues. We’d also like to thank the teachers, parents and team members who contributed to the costumes and props, that provided a truly magnificent theatrical experience for everyone that attended the event.”
