After their upbeat singles, ‘Flip a Coin (Overthinking)’ and ‘Skyline’, the Rotterdam-based punk band, After Elmer cools things down with their acoustic and fragile song ‘When We Break’. The song is about those times when no one seems to listen to you, even though you have something relevant to say. The lyric "we will all fall apart when we break" refers to breaking lines of communication by not listening to one another.
Packing a lot more emotion than what their fans are used to. This single is an acoustic pop punk song - reminiscent of the Mayday Parade style - that starts off with a minimalistic verse that is followed up by a violin driven chorus. Right before the end, the listener is surprised by a sudden heavy climax, which takes you away and runs over in the last chorus.
Since their start in 2018, After Elmer has seen an impressive growth in music and presence. After they survived the pandemic with the release of their debut-EP Look Alive, they went into the studio with Stijn Donders from Raiko Records. Those last sessions resulted in the impressive last three singles that show improvement of songwriting and creating dynamic rock songs, with elements of alternative and punk and dropping some small hints of heavier genres. On these new singles, they got help from Bury Tomorrow’s Tom Prendergast, who added the final touches to bring out some bigger, anthemic feelings in the songs.
