South Africa’s genre-blending family band, Cantrel, has released their latest radio single, 'Walls'. The song, part of their newly launched EP Jump, is an emotional and uplifting track that tackles mental health awareness, self-reflection, and personal growth. “The message of 'Walls' is that sometimes you just have to stop being so hard on yourself,” says Neil Breytenbach, one-half of Cantrel. “You are your own worst enemy at times, and you’ve got to try to save yourself from yourself. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people and call for help.”

'Walls' was born out of a deeply personal moment. Written by Neil himself at his grand piano, the creative process was sparked when his bandmate and son, Jesse, arrived home after a difficult day. This moment of vulnerability inspired the duo to write a song about helping people navigate the mental battles we often face within ourselves. “The process of writing music together flows naturally. Jesse and I have an incredible understanding and connection when it comes to creating music. It’s all raw, real and heartfelt.”

Cantrel has always aimed to push musical boundaries. Starting as a rap-rock band, their sound has since evolved to include acoustic and adult contemporary influences, showcasing their diversity. This evolution has helped them create a distinctive identity in South Africa’s music landscape. “We’re bringing a new flavour to the scene and letting our music flow naturally,” says Neil.

With the release of Jump, Cantrel is gearing up for an exciting 2025. They’ll embark on a European tour across Germany and Switzerland in February, followed by a series of performances around South Africa to promote the EP. Fans can look forward to both energetic rock shows and intimate acoustic sets, highlighting the band’s versatility.
