South African alternative rock band Snowing Down South are back, making waves once again with their first single after a 9-year hiatus. Known for their unique ability to fuse American and British rock influences into their own raw, distinctive sound, Snowing Down South dominated the campus rock scene in the early 2010s. Their single, 'It's Not Your Fault', held the number one spot on Tuks FM for nearly two months, cementing their place as a force in the alternative music scene. Now, after a long break, the band is set to release their new single, marking the beginning of a new era for their fans and alternative rock lovers alike.
Reformed in 2023, the band’s reunion came about after an impromptu late-night session listening to their old recordings. The result is a revitalized version of Snowing Down South, now hard at work on their upcoming EP, No Such Place as Far Away. The band’s new single, which was written over a decade ago, will be the first taste of their evolved sound.
Reflecting on the track’s origins, the band reveals: “The song was written 10 years ago after a long period of isolation, inspired by an intense longing for someone who might not even exist. Bruce Springsteen was definitely on our minds while writing it,” they shared.
Dusty, atmospheric, and dreamlike, the single doesn’t convey a direct message but instead offers an introspective look into the sensation of spending too much time with one’s own thoughts. The band explains, "It's more of an observation on the kind of limbo we tend to find ourselves in when we overthink."
Recording on the Road The recording process for the new single was as unconventional as the band's journey. Self-produced by drummer Simeon Kriel, the band spent six months travelling across South Africa, recording on the go. This approach brought a certain rawness and authenticity to the track, blending Snowing Down South's signature dusty sound with polished production elements.
With a sound described as dusty, atmospheric, and dreamlike, Snowing Down South's new single captures the essence of longing and the echoes of isolation in a way that only they can. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a new listener, their comeback is bound to make an impact.
Stay tuned for the release of their upcoming EP, No Such Place as Far Away, and catch Snowing Down South back where they belong: ruling the airwaves.
