South African alternative rock legend, Nic Olsen, returns with his highly anticipated album Echoes from a Silent Hill, released under his solo project, SonOfOld. The album, produced in collaboration with renowned South African producer Theo Crous and featuring Foo Fighters' multi-instrumentalist Rami Jaffee, promises a sonically rich journey that captures a pivotal period in Olsen's life.
Olsen, a mainstay in South Africa's alternative rock scene, first rose to prominence as the frontman of Perez, the early 2000s band that earned two South African Music Award nominations and delivered four chart-topping hits. His celebrated songwriting later extended to the indie-rock giants Parlotones, with tracks like the platinum-certified “Push Me to the Floor.”
Venturing into solo territory, Olsen launched SonOfOld with his 2008 albums Change is How You Feel and 3% Baby, both of which garnered praise, including from Rolling Stone Germany. After a hiatus, SonOfOld reemerged in 2020 with a self-titled album under Gallo Records, followed by the critically acclaimed EP Ghosts in 2022, solidifying Olsen’s signature blend of acoustic pop, Elliott Smith-esque harmonies, and '90s indie rock influences.
Echoes from a Silent Hill is Olsen’s latest offering, written during a period of personal reflection as he prepared to move from Cape Town to Munich. The album bridges the past with the present, drawing inspiration from iconic influences like Beck, Jane’s Addiction, and Neil Young. At its core, the album encapsulates Olsen’s laid-back, reflective philsophy, best described in his mantra: Be ‘the Dude’.
“The process was effortless, really,” Olsen explains. “It’s the most organic album I’ve ever made, a true reflection of where I was during that time.”
The album's recording was a significant creative reunion for Olsen and Crous, rekindling the chemistry they shared years ago. “Reconnecting with Theo felt like rediscovering an old friendship,” Olsen shares. The result is an album that blends deeply personal insights with universally resonant themes, making Echoes from a Silent Hill one of Olsen's most memorable works to date.
With intricate musicality and a message that speaks to the heart, Echoes from a Silent Hill cements Nic Olsen’s status as one of the most enduring and influential figures in the alternative rock scene.
