South African music icon Tim Parr has returned with his long-anticipated new EP, Malachi’s Dream, a work that both honours his storied legacy and reaffirms his relevance in today’s sonic landscape. As the founder of genre-defining bands Baxtop, Ella Mental, and Zap Dragons, Parr’s latest offering is a timely reminder of his enduring artistry.

Blending textured instrumentation with evocative lyricism, Malachi’s Dream sees Parr navigating themes of introspection, social awareness, and personal tribute. The five-track collection brims with timeless resonance and bold creative choices.

The EP’s title track, Malachi’s Dream, is a lush, atmospheric standout, reminiscent of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in its expansive arrangement and soaring melodies. Green World takes a whimsical, psych-pop approach to the pressing issue of climate change, balancing its gravity with playfulness — a track equal parts urgent and hopeful.

In Two Sides (Of the Same Coin), Parr channels Beatles-esque warmth and charm, crafting a scruffy, melodic tune that feels both classic and contemporary. You Light Me a Light is perhaps the most emotionally charged moment on the record, a stirring tribute to the late James Phillips. Stripped back and deeply heartfelt, it reveals Parr at his most vulnerable and reflective.
