South African singer-songwriter Kalden Berg has just released the music video for his vibrant new single, 'Mindy' — a sharp, witty take on one-sided love stories, wrapped in an infectious pop-rock groove with a twist of surreal humor.

Originally inspired by a stubborn, scruffy dog who refused to return Kalden’s affection, 'Mindy' evolved into something far deeper—a playful metaphor for the emotional Groundhog Day many face in toxic relationship cycles.

“I wrote this song after realizing the hilarity behind my relationship with a dog being so similar to the stories I’ve heard from so many of my friends,” says Kalden. “It’s about those relationships where no matter what you do, you end up right back where you started.”

The track—co-created with his livestream community and built from the ground up using his beat-up 10-year-old songbook—is a testament to Kalden’s raw creative spirit. He recorded nearly every instrument himself, roping in long-time collaborators Cinnamon Buns (bass) and Louie Lixx (guitar solo), with mixing by John Wisher and mastering by Ewald van Rensburg. The decision to keep the programmed drums was intentional—reinforcing the robotic, hypnotic repetition at the heart of the song’s theme.

The accompanying DIY-style music video dives headfirst into the surreal, bringing the concept of emotional déjà vu to life in full technicolor. Each scene is a hilarious reboot of the last, illustrating the frustration (and absurdity) of starting over again and again.

Kalden’s journey—from his beginnings in high school band Basement8, to semi-finalist on South Africa’s Got Talent in 2016, to his now deeply engaged online following — is anything but typical. Born in Cape Town, raised in Mbombela, and currently based in Johannesburg, his musical style is as diverse as his background.

“For me, it’s not just about building a fanbase,” Kalden shares. “It’s about building a community and sharing in the beauty of music creation.”
