Underground Press is thrilled to present a fresh perspective on seasoned South African musician Sharon Sibert, who now performs solo under the moniker Sheron. His journey through the South African music landscape has been nothing short of remarkable. Originally part of the band X-Over and having collaborated with iconic groups like Amersham and Watershed - just to name a few - Sheron has transformed into a dynamic solo artist, infusing his music with a unique blend of influences and experiences.

With his new single ‘Glow,’ we explore Sheron’s creative process, his insights into the music industry, and the personal stories that have shaped his artistry. Join us as we uncover the man behind the music and discover what’s next for this dedicated musician.

You’ve collaborated with many well-known artists and bands. Is there a particular collaboration that had a significant impact on your musical style or direction?

Almost all my experiences with previous bands and artists have helped shape the musician I am today. I am grateful to have worked with so many talented people along the way.

Your music blends different genres. How do you go about selecting elements from various styles to create your unique sound?

It’s all about experimenting with different sounds and elements, and of course, it’s based on what I hear in my head and feel in my heart. There’s no single method I follow. I enjoy listening to a variety of music and draw inspiration from anything that captures my attention.

As a musician who produces and engineers his own work, what do you enjoy most about being involved in every aspect of the creative process?

It’s incredibly challenging. Every time I work on a new song, it pushes me to explore new ideas. It can be difficult to generate creative ideas on my own, but it’s rewarding to push beyond what I think I’m capable of. I love discovering new musical concepts and trying fresh approaches. Collaborating with others can make the process easier as ideas flow more quickly, but the journey is similar. When I’m on my own, I just must push myself a bit harder.

You’ve performed in front of a variety of audiences, from intimate venues to large festivals. How do you adapt your performance style to suit different crowd sizes and settings?

It’s all about reading the room – a skill I’m constantly trying to improve. No two gigs are the same, and that’s what makes it so challenging. Sometimes I get it right, and sometimes I don’t, but I always learn from those experiences and apply the lessons to future performances. I don’t think anyone gets it perfect every time.

The music industry has evolved significantly with the rise of technology. How do you feel about the current landscape, and what opportunities do you think it presents for independent artists like yourself?

There are pros and cons, of course. It’s much easier to release music now, but the fundamentals haven’t changed. You still need to find ways to reach an audience. You no longer need a record deal, but you either need to know how to promote yourself effectively or work with someone who does. Recording music has become simpler, but the promotional side remains as challenging as ever unless you’re extremely lucky. There’s still a lot of hard work involved.

‘Glow’ seems to be both a celebration and a reflection on the life of a musician. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind the song’s lyrics, and what message you hope to convey through them?

It started as a conversation. What we do as musicians is a lot of fun – getting people to dance, party, and have a great time. ‘Glow’ is a reference to that feeling of dancing and enjoying yourself under the lights until you’re glowing with sweat.

The word ‘glow’ holds significant meaning in the track. You’ve mentioned it refers to the sweat and energy of performing. How did this concept evolve during the songwriting process, and why did it feel like the right metaphor for the message of the song?

It was a long time ago, so it’s hard to recall the exact process, but being a working, gigging musician is hard work, especially on stage. Sweating is just part of it. I’ve done many shows where the audience has danced so much, they’re soaked in sweat. I think that’s what I had in mind when writing it – partying hard makes you sweat.

In ‘Glow,’ there’s a balance between the fun and joy of making music and the hard work behind the scenes. How did you approach blending these contrasting elements lyrically and musically to create the overall vibe of the track?

The lyrics came quite naturally as I was writing. I can’t remember the exact thoughts I had at the time, so I must apologise. When I write, I aim to create a blend of lyrical and musical coherence. That’s what I recall from the process.

If you could pick one song from your discography to introduce new fans to your music, which would it be and why?

It’s hard to choose, as all my songs hold personal significance, often based on my own experiences or those of people close to me. ‘Darling’ is very personal because it’s about something terrible that happened to someone I know. ‘Ordinary World’ is another important one, as it reflects my concerns about the way we’re harming our planet with our selfish behaviour. I feel strongly about that issue.

Outside of music, what other passions or interests do you have that inspire your songwriting or creative process?

I love the outdoors – camping, boating – and I have a passion for flying planes, though my experience is mostly limited to simulators and only a little real flying. I also love animals, especially my cats. I’m not entirely sure how these interests influence my music, but I enjoy them.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes and goals for your solo career beyond the release of ‘Glow’? Are there any exciting projects on the horizon that you can share with us?

I plan to continue releasing new music, including both new songs and re-recordings of some older tracks that haven’t yet been properly produced. I’ve also recently started working with my son, Daniel, who’s 23 and into hip hop and rap. We’ve just finished our first crossover track, and I’m really excited about this collaboration. It’s a great way to stretch ourselves creatively and bond through music.

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Sheron for taking the time to share his insights and experiences with us. His upcoming single, ‘Glow,’ is set to be an exciting addition to his already impressive repertoire, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for him as a solo artist. Be sure to catch Sheron live and stream ‘Glow’ on all platforms from 25 October.
