Johannesburg, 15 May 2025: Proof that small gestures can spark big change — Mall of Africa has transformed proceeds from its festive season gift-wrapping station into a tangible upgrade for Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School in Rabie Ridge, Midrand. In partnership with Netflix and local foundations, the mall delivered a new assembly area and vital improvements to the school’s facilities.
December’s festive shopping rush wasn’t just about ticking off wish lists — it helped fund a project with purpose. Sponsored by The Squid Game Experience from Netflix, Mall of Africa’s gift-wrapping station raised R73 833 for the school’s infrastructure. The funds, in collaboration with the Attacq Foundation and Gift of the Givers, financed the construction of a new sheltered assembly area for over 2 400 learners and refurbished existing facilities for safer, dignified gatherings.
The donation couldn’t have come at a better time. Since its founding in 2003, Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary has operated from mobile container classrooms, with little infrastructure support from authorities. For Principal Nthabiseng Sebola, this project marks more than bricks and mortar — it’s a symbol of hope.
“The new assembly area is a wonderful space where our children can safely gather, eat and learn. We are grateful to everyone involved in making this happen,” said Sebola.
Yasmeen Lorgat, General Manager of Mall of Africa, added, “Community upliftment isn’t a seasonal affair. This project proves how retail spaces can deliver lasting social value.”
The initiative also contributed funds to the school’s daily feeding scheme, which is relied upon by many of its young learners.
