To date, Reid’s discography has always been interesting while keeping to her singer/songwriter brand but her venture with Drawing on Scars—an American project started by a Will Thacker that’s built around online collaboration—sees her jumping into waters that, to the outside world at least, seem entirely out of her comfort zone.
Taking the place of her acoustic guitar is a gripping pop-punk composition, written and performed by Thacker, which has a dynamism that makes it impossible to ignore. The music’s focused intensity gives Reid’s vocal venom as she delves into the frustrations of dealing with compulsively indecisive people with a Hayley Williams-esque bite.
There are moments throughout the song where the Paramore influence starts verging on derivative, but that previously mentioned dynamism combined with stellar songwriting on all fronts and an irresistible mix ensures it stays engaging from start to finish.
